ANTI-PARTY: WHY WIKE, OTHERS ESCAPED SANCTION AT PDP NEC MEETING – REP CAUCUS CHAIR AGBEDI
Abuja – Nigeria
Tuesday, 26th August 2025.
Abuja – Chairman of the South-South Caucus in the House of Representatives, Hon. Fred Agbedi,Ph.D, has explained why former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and other party stalwarts were not sanctioned during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday.
Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency, said Wike is not the only party member guilty of anti-party activities, stressing that even some PDP leaders are still openly supporting the incumbent government.
He noted that while such actions are clearly against the party’s interest, the PDP leadership is more focused on rebuilding and stabilising its structures than on sanctioning individuals at this stage.
“It’s not about Wike alone. It is beyond Wike. There are a lot of others who have played anti-party in one way or the other. Some are even saying, ‘I’m going to support so-and-so person, I’m going to vote for so-and-so person.’ That’s clearly anti-party,” Agbedi said.
The lawmaker explained that the party is deliberately avoiding hasty disciplinary measures to avoid worsening its internal crisis.
“There are certain decisions that if you are the leader, you cannot take in a hurry. You take time, navigate the contours in such a way that when you make a decision, it lands safely,” he added.
Agbedi assured that the PDP, widely regarded as Nigeria’s main opposition party, is taking stock of infractions and will address them at the appropriate time. He expressed optimism that the party would emerge stronger, united, and better organised ahead of the 2027 general elections.
